4.09. Stocks: Infrastructure

Try to find information that quantifies the total infrastructure that is locked into the territorial's material stock. For instance, data on total length of roads (and ideally the type of road), or the total length of piping (for water, gas, petroleum, etc).

Hi Paul,


I was wondering which code EMP between the ones in the list "Group 4 - Energy, materials and products", is it better to use when it comes to different infrastructures. For example when I had to process files containing the stock of buildings, or the stock of roads length, I used the code EMP3.1 Marble, granite, sandstone, porphyry, basalt, other ornamental or building stone (excluding slate). Is it correct ? What do you think would be better?
In annexe I show you a part of a table where I am processing data on land use. You can se in the first lines that I'am using this code EMP3.1 but I wanted your advice.


Another thing related to this table that I wanted to show you is the following. How you can see, I have segment defining specific data "industrial and artisanal land", "buildings land", etc. Then I have some sub-total, as "Housing and infrastructure land", "Agricultural land", "Wooded land", and so on. And finally the total land use in my territory.
In this case the problem is that Metabolism of Cities, when read the processed file, take everything as a segment that contain a data expressed in number and sums all togheter without distinction between the material code (different EMP) and the class of data (firsthand, sub-total, total). So, the final results are columns, chart, pie, etc. that consider toghether different kind of products and sum in the final total, some sub total already expressed giving wrong results.
You can see an exemple of what I mean here with energy and emissions. What would you recommend me to do ? To take away all totals and sub-totals ?

I'm sorry today I posted a lot of questions, but i'm really into the processing step of my datasets.
Now, I understand better what I have to do, how the programs works and what is relevant to be highlighted.


The question above is a bit confused, so, to make it easier what i would like to know is which code EMP is better to use while :
- processing data on number of bulidings
- data on hectares of land used with urban infrastructures
- data on roads lenght (apsphalt)
- data on wastes other than municipal and hazardous (industrial, from construction sites,etc.)


Then, I've seen that I don't have to put total, and sub-total on the tables. At the same time I was still wondering what to do in the case of tables with data on more elments. This question is better explained and asked here.


Finally, I made some errors while processing the following tables 1, 2, 3 , 4, I wanted to ask you if you could delete the chart originated, so I can fix the file and upload the new corrected version.

I'm back from holidays and catching up ;-) Good to see all your progress!

With regards to which code to use, there is one very important element to take into account. I see you mention some files that have total hectares, but I think this should not be listed as a "stocks and flows" file. Instead, this seems to be a geospatial file. For stocks and flows data, we should really be looking for information that contains data on material quantities. If you have a file that contains total hectares of land use, the best format to upload this in would be a shapefile.

The total number of hectares of something may be used as an intermediate file if you calculate the total quantity of e.g. agricultural production, where you take number of hectares planted and multiply that by the yield. However, in that case the file to process would be the file that contains the total quantities harvested, not the file with the total hectares. So in short, I think that particular file should be reclassified.

Also good that you saw that no summing up of numbers should be done - the system can do that for you. And nice that Aris could sort out the ones that had errors.

Lastly, you had a few other questions about EMP codes, which I will address below:

  • processing data on number of bulidings --> I have added a new category for "Buildings and construction" (EMP8). For buildings you can use 8.1
  • data on hectares of land used with urban infrastructures --> as mentioned, I think this should be reclassified
  • data on roads lenght (apsphalt) ---> You can find this in EMP8
  • data on wastes other than municipal and hazardous (industrial, from construction sites,etc.) --> there is now a new subclassification in EMP7, see here.
